Julien Beneyton’s work deals with different aspects of society that he has personally witnessed. Whether it’s a hip-hop artist in New York or some fishermen in Mauritania, the starting point for Beneyton is always an encounter he has with a certain person or particular place. He documents this by taking pictures and uses them as sketches for the eventual painting. In his portraits and street scenes, Beneyton reconstructs the existing composition by adding objects and figures. He intensifies details that serve as clues to the subject’s personality, and demand for a closer look at the world around us.
